Feedback.
Stenstrom, Anna-Brita
A study of feedback in conversational question-response exchanges focused on the questioner's feedback to the respondent. It examined three types of "followup" moves: the ordinary type revealing the questioner's attitude to the response and closing the exchange; the type signaling the questioner's reaction to the response and inviting further confirmation; and the respondent's confirmation. The analysis found that followup moves are recurrent features of discourse but with markedly different use in face-to-face and telephone conversations and among individual texts. It also found that followup moves are related to status and authority, with more used in teacher-student interactions than between equals. The most frequently occurring single lexical item used as a followup was"yes," followed by "m," which could serve as a variant of "yes" or "no." The characteristic tone pattern found for "yes, no, and m" functioning as response and followup was falling. (MSE)
