Examines the impact on composition studies of the fact that in the 1960s the university became a breeding ground for radical culture while simultaneously being complicitous with the normative culture of the bureaucratic state. Suggests that the determination of composition studies to professionalize created an unresolved set of institutional and internal oppositions.
