This collection is intended to show what public libraries can and would like to do to support adult learning, encourage understanding and cooperation among libraries and adult and community educators, and publicize the work already being done by libraries. The following papers are included: "The State of the Art in 1985," by Robert Craig; "Adult Education and Libraries: A Partnership?" by Anthony Cooke; "Adult Basic Education and Libraries," by Pablo Foster; "Library Support for Independent Learners," by Vernon Smith; "Open Learning: The Role of the Public Library," by Nigel Paine; "A Large Number of Small Steps: Broadcasting and Libraries," by James Boyle; "A Community Educator's View," by Peter Kearney; and "A Librarian's View," by James Orr. Also included are an introduction by Elisabeth Gerver, a paper entitled "Prologue: From Incidental Learning" by Graham Wilson, and a paper entitled "Epilogue: An Educational Force" by Arthur Maltby.
