This health education curriculum guide has been developed to assist local school districts develop stronger, more effective, school health programs. The guide is organized into four broad areas of health education: physical health, mental and social health, consumer and environmental health, and safe living. Each of these areas is divided into suggested curriculum for pupils in the elementary, middle, junior high, and senior high grades. Area one, physical health, focuses on factors that determine the level of health each child and youth may possess, such as: (1) body structure and function; (2) cleanliness and appearance; (3) dental health; (4) fitness and body dynamics; (5) nutrition; (6) diseases and disorders; (7) sensory perception; and (8) sleep, rest, and relaxation. The area devoted to mental and social health examines all aspects of living as they are manifested in terms of emotional and social well-being. The third area, consumer and environmental health, is concerned with ecology, health careers, community health, world health, and consumer health. The fourth area discusses safety and accident prevention, first aid, and disaster behavior. A bibliography is appended, as well as a listing of audiovisual aids for use in health instruction. (JD)
