In the United States the prevalence of childhood overweight and obesity is growing at an alarming rate. The solution to this complex problem will require involvement from a wide variety of institutions if it is to be successful. Children's museums could potentially be one of the institutions that provide support to families by offering fun, engaging programming that promotes healthy behaviors. The Boston Children's Museum recently conducted a series of such programs with low-income, minority families in Boston housing developments. Surveys were used with to determine the acceptability and relevance of the program to participants. 75% of adults reported learning something useful, and almost 90% of children reported having fun. This preliminary evaluation suggests that museum programming can be used to engage low-income, minority families on issues of nutrition and physical activity when brought to the developments where they live.
