Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is characterized by a blow to the head or other penetrating head injury resulting in impairment of the brain's functioning. Despite the high incidence of TBI in adolescents, many educators still consider TBI to be a low-incidence disability. In addition, school personnel often report receiving little to no pre-service training and education regarding TBI and subsequent effects of injury following return to school (Hooper, 2006; Mohr & Bullock, 2005). Such deficits often include difficulties in the areas of cognitive, academic, behavioral and social functioning. In reviewing the literature as well as offering evidence-based and practical suggestions for targeting the needs of these students, the purpose of this article is to equip educators and other school staff involved in the school reentry process for students with TBI with the knowledge necessary to make informed decisions when addressing the specific needs of this group.
