Ethical Ideologies: Do They Affect Shopping Behaviors and Perceptions of Morality?
Cho, Hyeon; Yoo, Jeong-Ju; Johnson, Kim K. P.
Journal of Family and Consumer Sciences, v97 n3 p48-55 Sep 2005
Counterfeiting is a serious problem facing several industries, including the medical, agricultural, and apparel industries (Bloch, Bush, & Campbell, 1993). The authors investigated whether ethical viewpoints affect perceptions of the morality of particular shopping behaviors, attitudes toward counterfeit products, and intentions to purchase such products. Participants were 208 undergraduates divided into four groups on the basis of their ideology (i.e., situationist, subjectivist, exceptionist, or absolutist). The four groups significantly differed in regard to their perceptions of the morality of the shopping practices assessed. They did not differ in terms of their attitudes toward or intentions to purchase counterfeit goods. All groups expressed anti-counterfeiting attitudes but indicated that they intended to buy counterfeit items. (Contains 4 tables.)
