Identification of Opinion Leaders in Public Affairs, Educational Matters and Family Planning in the Township of Atteridgeville. Research Finding Comm N-142.
Heath, M. R.; Bekker, S. J.
A study examined opinion leadership among blacks in Atteridgeville, South Africa. Specifically the study sought to identify potential opinion leaders, opinion seekers and opinion avoiders with respect to public affairs, educational and family planning matters in Atteridgeville township, and to construct a profile of such opinion leaders. Subjects, randomly chosen individuals representing 450 black households, responded to a questionnaire on mass media use and interpersonal communication behavior. Results indicated that opinion leaders in Atteridgeville public affairs are probably more exposed to the mass media than are nonleaders, particularly opinion avoiders. Results also indicated that opinion leaders participated more in interpersonal communication than did avoiders or inactives--leaders were more aware of their role and status than the nonleaders. Analyses also indicated that opinion leadership in public affairs was not associated with age, sex, or high socioeconomic status. Opinion leaders in educational matters mirror leaders in public affairs, except that leadership is a function of age, as well as of being better qualified educationally than nonleaders. In the case of family planning matters, results again reflect those of the previous categories, with the exception that males tend to be opinion avoiders. Findings suggest that all opinion leaders spent more time reading newspapers and watching television than did nonleaders and were positively related to white change agent contact. (Fifty-three tables of data and 23 figures are included, and references and a sample questionnaire are appended.) (NKA)
