Black in a Blonde World: Race and Girls' Interpretations of the Feminine Ideal in Teen Magazines.
Duke, Lisa
Journalism and Mass Communication Quarterly, v77 n2 p367-92 Sum 2000
Finds that Black adolescent girls were largely uninterested in teen magazines' beauty images because they conflict with African-American standards of attractiveness; that makeup and haircare products were seen as specifically intended for White girls, who consequently invest more authority in the magazines' counsel and images; and that White girls were generally unaware of any racial bias in the magazines.
