Living (and Teaching) in an Unjust World: New Perspectives on Multicultural Education.
Goodman, Wendy, Ed.
This collection of essays is a response to educators who limit multicultural education to "culture of the quarter" or "country of the week." The essays examine the issues of multicultural education deeply, exploring the just and unjust issues of schooling, the need to move beyond teaching about culture to facilitating self discovery, and the way classrooms mirror larger society. Following an introduction, essays in the collection are: (1) "Living (and Teaching) in an Unjust World" (D. Goodman); (2) "Listen to the Rhythm: Crossing Multicultural Boundaries" (D. Horan); (3) "Discovering the First-Grade Curriculum in 'The Empty Pot'" (W. Goodman); (4) "Questions of Power and the Power of Questions" (J. Pryor); (5) "Turning Over the Wheel: Discovering the Strength in Diversity" (C. Karns); (6) "Mediating Different Worlds: Bicultural Students at School" (A. I. Heras; E. Craviotto); (7) "Literacy Liberation with Trade Books in Social Studies" (T. A. Caron); (8) "'We've Never Read Any Book about Laos': Culturally Relevant Books in Literature Study Circles" (K. D. Samway); (9) "A Different Spin on Parent Involvement: Exploring Funds of Knowledge within a Systems Perspective" (L. Patterson; S. Baldwin); (10) "The Wheel of Advocacy: International Students in Middle America" (A. Edmonds); (11) "Affirming Difference while Building a Nation: Teaching Diversity in Neo-Apartheid America" (O. van den Berg); (12) "Becoming a Multicultural Educator: Talking the Talk and Walking the Walk" (D. Cristol); (13) "International Students, International Teachers: A Multicultural Dilemma" (M. A. F. Castro); (14) "Using Critical Questioning to Investigate Identity, Culture, and Difference" (J. Gladstein); (15) "Sparking the Conversation: Teachers Find Cultural Connections and Communities of Learners" (N. P. Gallavan); and (16) "Finding the Freedom to Teach and Learn, and Live" (J. Wink).
