Understanding the Theory and Practice of Molecular Spectroscopy: The Effects of Spectral Bandwidth
Hirayama, Satoshi; Steer, Ronald P.
Journal of Chemical Education, v87 n12 p1344-1347 Dec 2010
The near-UV spectrum of benzene is used to illustrate the effects of variations in instrument spectral bandwidth on absorbance and molar absorptivity measurements and on the independence of values of quantities such as the oscillator strength that are based on integrated absorptivity. Excel-based computer simulations are provided that help develop student understanding of these measurements and their grounding in theory. (Contains 4 figures.)
