Developed to meet Washington State Day Care Minimum Licensing Requirements, guidelines in this handbook concern 10 health topics. Discussion focuses on (1) preventing illness in day care settings; (2) illnesses, their treatment, ways to limit their spread, and what caregivers can do when they have a sick child at their center; (3) caregivers' responsibilities for children's health histories, physical exams, and immunizations; (4) prevention of accidents by use of indoor and outdoor safety checklists; (5) normal child growth and development from birth through the second year; (6) nutritional needs of infants and young children; (7) dental health; (8) encouragement of children's self-esteem and good behavior; (9) child abuse; and (10) community resources for more information or assistance. References for addititional readings are listed. Discussion includes "decision charts" about specific symptoms which are designed to help caregivers make health care decisions. (RH)
