Student Debt, Problem-Solving, and Decision-Making of Adult Learners: A Basic Qualitative Study
Brooks, William J.
ProQuest LLC, Ph.D. Dissertation, Capella University
A basic qualitative research study was conducted to develop insights into how adult learners employ problem-solving and decision-making (PSDM), when considering college financing, student loans, and student debt. Using the social media Website Facebook, eight qualified participants were recruited. Participants were interviewed via telephone, and interviews were recorded and transcribed. Data were coded into segments, segments were consolidated into categories, and categories were organized into themes. Two hundred fifty-six data segments informed the identification of 15 categories, which were consolidated into five themes. One theme, the proposal of an existing, implicit logic for college financing, was identified as the dominant finding. A discussion of the results and recommendations for further research conclude the study. [The dissertation citations contained here are published with the permission of ProQuest LLC.
