Chronicles of the Sea: The History and Literature of Man's Voyages.
Roderer, Lawrence C.; Lacy, Richard
In spring 1984, an interdisciplinary course on the history and literature of man's voyages and relationship with the sea was introduced at J. Sargeant Reynolds Community College (JSRCC). The course was team taught from the perspectives of the social sciences and English departments, incorporating fiction and non-fiction sources related to seafaring, exploration, discovery, colonization, fishing, whaling, mining the sea, and other topics concerned with human experience with the ocean. Readings included works by writers such as Kipling, Melville, and Conrad, as well as writings of historians, sociologists, scientists, and philosophers. As much as possible, the course utilized student-centered learning activities such as the writing of weekly personal accounts based on the readings; small group work; mock tryouts for parts in one of Eugene O'Neill's early sea plays; and field trips to the National Aquarium, a warship, an isolated barrier island, and a topsail schooner. Students at JSRCC and instructors from other institutions have responded favorably to the course. Attachments include an article on the course published in the JSRCC alumni magazine, samples of student comments on the form and content of the course, a sample final exam essay, and an outline of course units.
