Enacting Organizational Culture: Balloons in the Air
Shapiro, Elayne
Communication Teacher, v20 n1 p18-22 Jan 2006
This article presents an activity that encourages students to create and analyze an organizational culture. In this activity, students perform two rounds of "keeping balloons in the air" with a brief interlude to try and improve performance. Next, they conduct an in-depth discussion of elements of organizational culture that affect productivity. Third, they share their findings with the class as a whole. Finally, they conduct one final round of "Balloons in the Air." This activity is highly engaging for students and very illuminating with respect to the interaction between communication and culture. Albeit somewhat artificial compared to real life organizations, students are easily able to extrapolate lessons and learn from them. A list of references and suggested readings is included.
