Learning Science through History
Brodie, Eleanor
Primary Science, n111 p25-27 Jan 2010
This article discusses how the author has developed and managed a collection of exciting resources that aim to aid transition from primary to secondary school by tackling science topics through historical contexts. Working with teachers at both primary and secondary level, the Double Crossed project has designed two exciting cross-curricular resources that can be used in both the last year of primary (year 6, ages 10/11, in England and Wales) and the first year of secondary school (year 7, ages 11/12), either during formal lesson time or during a more informal off-timetable session. Double Crossed began by exploring an alternative approach to the primary-secondary transition period by focusing initially on the experience of secondary pupils as they arrive at their new school. The decision to use history in this project is rooted in the nature of historical endeavour. Double Crossed aimed to use historical methodology to make science learning more accessible, effective, and enjoyable. (Contains 2 figures and 3 boxes.)
