Research in Education, v89 p13-22 May 2013
Large class size is an issue in testing at all levels of Education. As a panacea to this, multiple choice test formats has become very popular. This case study was designed to diagnose pre-service teachers' competency in constructing questions (IQT); direct questions (DQT); and best answer (BAT) varieties of multiple choice items. Subjects were 88 third year pre-service teachers of the Faculty of Education, University of Calabar, Nigeria, selected through multistage sampling procedure. Data was collected as mid semester assessment in Test and Measurement course. Students were required to construct 10 items each on IQT, DQT and BAT. Means, bar chart, ranks, dependent and independent t-tests were used to analyze the data. Findings indicated that pre-service teachers' used in this study demonstrated high competency in construction of multiple choice test items, except for BAT, where subjects experienced serious difficulty. Generally, competency in construction of different varieties of the multiple choice test items does not depend significantly on teachers' gender. Females however performed significantly better than their male counterparts in construction of BAT. It was concluded that competency in constructing one variety of test type, does not necessarily mean competency in all test types. (Contains 2 figures and 3 tables.)
