Women Students at the Boston Architectural Center 1975-1978.

The Boston Architectural Center (BAC) offers a positive educational environment and contributes to opening the architectural profession to women. Results of a survey indicate that the percentage of female undergraduates and female faculty is higher than at other architectural schools. Also, 292 women who have attended or are attending the BAC were surveyed about their personal characteristics, reasons for enrolling at BAC, evaluation of BAC as an educational institution, job experiences, and personal attitudes and recommendations. The typical BAC women is 27 years old, architecture was not her first career choice, and she generally has a bachelor's degree in an unrelated field. Her professional interests are design, development, and environmental design. She is employed full time as a draftsperson or clerk by an architectural firm at an annual salary of $9,000. There is a 48% chance that she has encountered discrimination, but would choose architecture again. Factors fostering a positive educational environment in the BAC include low tuition, evening classes, open admissions, the work/study program, and the educational philosophy. The high percentage of women enrolled and the fact that over 50% of those who have left the program intend to return indicates not only that the educational environment is positive but also that the BAC does aid students in acquiring technical skills necessary for their present positions.
