Life Styling for the Promotion of Health While Aging.
Perry, Gloria R.
Classes on lifestyling for the promotion of health for the elderly were offered to a senior citizens' group in a community center setting. The objectives of the sessions were: (1) to teach the importance of health maintenance and primary prevention throughout the aging process; (2) to disseminate information relative to diet, exercise, and stress reduction; (3) to expose senior citizens to a wellness-based concept of health as opposed to an illness-based concept; and (4) to emphasize it is never too late to focus on one's health. The ultimate goal of the program was to decrease complications from disease and to increase longevity. Holistic health classes included the topics of self-responsibility, nutritional awareness, physical fitness, environmental sensitivity, and stress management. To measure the program's effectiveness, 14 participants completed the Travis Wellness Inventory which measures wellness in degrees from premature death through a high level of wellness. The highest score was 90 out of a possible maximum score of 94 and the mean score for the respondents was 66.3. The most positive responses dealt with nutritional awareness, self-responsibility, expressing of emotions, and environmental safety (excluding automobile safety). The most negative responses dealt with physical activity, with few respondents reporting maintenance of a regular exercise program. This project demonstrated the efficacy of health promotion programs with the elderly, and similar programs are recommended. (Inventory questions are included.) (ABL)
