School Web Site of the Month
Tech Directions, v68 n1 p20-21 Aug 2008
This article showcases August's School Web Site of the Month, http://magnoliaisdcommunities.org/communities/bschuster, which was produced by Bradley H. Schuster (bschuster@magnoliaisd.org) and his students at Magnolia High School, Magnolia, Texas. Schuster teaches architectural drafting and building trades classes at both Magnolia High School and Magnolia West High School. Schuster came up with the concept of his current web site as a result of a class on blogs and web sites hosted by the Magnolia Technology Department. He had a site prior to that class, but credits a new, easier-to-use system provided by the technology department with inspiring creation of the new site during the 2006-2007 school year. He wanted with the new site both to give students information about his course offerings and to provide a vehicle for displaying his students' work. He feels that it's important to give students online access to examples of what they've learned and created and to give them input on site content. Some parts of the site that Schuster himself maintains feature detailed descriptions of course content and goals for every class he teaches. This gives both students and parents a good sense of what the courses are about before students enroll. Schuster also provides information on his students' winning efforts in state and national competitions. To create and maintain the site, Schuster's school district uses the Joomla content management system run through a Unix server using php. Educators use a November Learning Communities blogging software template that has been adjusted by the technology department. They also use Chief Architect, AutoCAD, Photoshop, several MS programs, and any other program that they have a use and license for.
