Seven papers are presented which illustrate model programs and research on providing vocational services to students with disabilities. "Project WorkAbility: California's Successful Transition Program for Secondary Students" (Deborah Henderson) describes locally controlled transition projects involving interagency collaboration and statewide partnerships with industry. "Exemplary Career/Vocational Education Programs for Special Populations" (Thomas Wermuth and Carolyn Maddy-Bernstein) describes the characteristics of exemplary special needs programs and effective practices in vocational education, as identified by the Technical Assistance for Special Populations Program (TASPP). "Affective and Cognitive Factors in Selecting AIDS Materials" (Janice Ferguson et al.) analyzes 12 pamphlets on acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS) for content and readability appropriate for mildly handicapped secondary students. "A Portrait of 'Futures' Clients and Their Instructional Needs" (Colin Laine) examines cognitive style of severely disadvantaged and disabled youth in an employment training program. Other papers include "The Job Training and Tryout Research Project: Findings from a Five-Year Descriptive Study of the Transition and Postsecondary Adjustment of Young Adults with Mild Disabilities" (George Tilson, Jr. and Elvie Germino Hausken); "Facilitating Successful Vocational/Special Education Programs for Mildly Handicapped Adolescents through Collaborative Consultation with Parents" (Linda Elksnin and Nick Elksnin); and "How Can We Help? Services, Activities, and Materials Available from TASPP" (Carolyn Maddy-Bernstein). In addition, abstracts of other presentations are provided, covering the topics of rural service delivery, vocational assessment, instructional strategies, employment training, collaboration, and transition. An appendix contains a criteria checklist for evaluating AIDS curriculum materials. References accompany each paper. (JDD)
