Telling the Public--It's Science Week
Auty, Geoff
Education in Science, n242 p16-17 Apr 2011
This article describes an opportunity to engage the public in demonstrating and explaining some aspects of science. About 10 years ago, the author met Peter Evennett in the ASE Conference exhibition. Peter was a member of the Leeds Philosophical and Literary Society and currently its president. As a contribution to "Science Week" (which dates back to 1994), they were planning to set up an exhibition of science-related activities that take place in the Leeds area, using the impressive Hall in the Parkinson Building of Leeds University. He asked if ASE could contribute. The author suggested that one or two demonstrations, adequately explained, would suffice, and being ASE Region Chair, he volunteered to produce something. About ten organisations assembled at the first event to put on their displays. These ranged from model engineers to astronomers, beekeepers and a local nature reserve. A year later, the exhibition moved to The Light, a new shopping area at the edge of the city. In 2009, the exhibition moved to the Leeds City Museum, less than 200 metres from The Light and often used by families as a diversion from shopping. Here, the author describes the 2010 display.
