This course, one of 16 sequential courses comprising phase one of a part-time Bachelor of Arts degree program in Australian Studies, deals with the ways in which knowledge is historically classified into distinct fields. The example used is the 19th century demarcation between science and psuedo-science. The course is designed for independent study combined with tutorial sessions. Chapter 1 is an introduction to the course and its study objectives. Chapter 2, "Science: History of the Word," covers semantic history, professionalization, specialization, and disciplines. Chapter 3, "Defining Science and Pseudo-Science," discusses the attempts to sort the scientific from the nonscientific, using the examples of astrology, mesmerism, and phrenology. Chapter 4, "Disciplining Knowledge," deals with how knowledge is divided into disciplines and how these disciplines guard their boundaries. Chapter 5, "Modern Science and Pseudoscience," deals with changes in science in the 20th century and modern conflicts over what is scientific. Materials for the first tutorial session deal with the ways in which the scientific community is closed; the second is designed to help students with their essays. Also included are lists of required readings, additional readings, a bibliography, and self-assessment questions. (IS)
