Connecting the Past and the Present to the Future: Engaging Your Undergraduate Students in Professional Organizations
Menn, Mindy A.
College Teaching, v59 n3 p124 2011
Today's undergraduate students are interconnected in more ways than ever before. Cell phones, text messages, Facebook, Twitter, and MySpace all make it possible for individuals to connect with one another in seconds. The interconnectedness among this generation of students makes this demographic ideal for participation in the professional organizations of their respective fields. Professional organizations exist in almost every academic area and serve numerous purposes for established academicians as well as budding scholars. Several organizations sponsor peer-reviewed journals, provide a coordinated front for professional development activities, and host conferences where professionals in a field can network and exchange emerging research ideas. Furthermore, professional organizations often serve as a national voice for members on pressing political or social issues that impact a specific field or profession. Budding undergraduate students who are contemplating graduate school or further involvement in a specific profession may be unaware of the professional opportunities that are available until a professor enlightens them to these avenues. In this article, the author discusses how to engage undergraduate students in professional organizations. To connect students to relevant organizations, the author offers a few specific strategies.
