Beyond the School: Community and Institutional Partnerships in Art Education.
Irwin, Rita L. Ed.; Kindler, Anna M., Ed.
Understanding education in contexts broader than schooling has important implications for art education and calls for an examination of alternative venues, initiatives, and strategies that facilitate artistic development, encourage aesthetic growth, and promote reflection about the role and value of art in a society. This anthology demonstrates that communities and institutions constitute rich and valuable resources and contexts in which learning in, through, and about art can effectively take place. The anthology's introduction: "Art Education beyond School Boundaries: Identifying Resources, Exploring Possibilities" (Anna M. Kindler and Rita L. Irwin) is followed by 12 articles divided into two broad parts. Part 1, "Communities as a Place to Begin" contains: (1) "Where Community Happens" (Robin E. Clark); (2) "Hawaii: Arts Education Partnerships in a Diverse Community" (Peggy Hunt); (3) "Commonwealth Games, Showcase for Visual Art" (Robert Dalton); (4) "School-Community Collaboration and Artistic Process" (Jacques-Albert Wallot and Bruno Joyal); and (5) "Art Education Wrapped/Trapped in Fun: The Hope and Flight of Recreation Centre Art Instructors" (Lara M. Lackey). Part 2, "Voices Within Communities," contains: (6) "Moving the Mountain: Linking Higher Art Education and Communities" (Fiona Dean); (7) "The Dinner Party" (Philip J. Perry); (8) "Art as a Way of Learning: A Business and Education Partnership" (Patricia Pinciotti and Rebecca Gorton); (9) "Literacy and Visual Culture in Three Art Gallery Settings" (Lon Dubinsky); (10) "The Artemisia Project: School, Artists, University and Museum Partnership" (Ann Calvert); and (11) "Matrix, Meaning and Metacognition" (Cheryl Meszaros).
