Knowing Neighborhoods: Students and Teachers as Artistic Colleague
Mishlove, Robert; Strange, Wayne
Teaching Artist Journal, v6 n4 p259-265 Oct 2008
Wayne Strange is a sixth-grade student and Bob Mishlove is an art teacher at Nathan R. Goldblatt Elementary School. Bob is a participant in the Building Community, Curriculum and Leadership initiative of the Chicago Public School's Fine and Performing Arts Magnet Cluster Program for elementary schools. Collaborating with the Chicago Arts Partnerships in Education (CAPE) through a three-year D.E.O. grant, the district has created a community of 120 art educators from across the city who are taking leadership roles in developing inquiry-based curriculum and student-centered teaching practices. Last summer CAPE offered six arts teachers an opportunity to work with visiting artists and to exhibit their work at one of Chicago's premier experimental arts spaces, Three Walls gallery. Bob chose to become a collaborator with Wayne Strange. He and Wayne produced a photo-installation exploring the neighborhood surrounding Goldblatt School. In this interview Wayne and Bob talk about their collaboration.
