Metropolitan State College of Denver is an urban college in Denver, Colorado, serving 200-240 student teachers per semester, with teacher licensure programs in Early Childhood, Elementary K-6, Special Education, Secondary English, Mathematics, Science, Social Studies, Modern Languages, K-12 Art, Music, and Physical Education. Approximately 97 percent of the student teachers completed the licensure standards at the required proficiency level to be recommended for licensure in the state. However, based on the data gathered by a group of education elementary professors, 82 of preservice teachers who met all the requirements for student teaching withdrew before starting, due to personal reasons. Fortunately, preservice teachers who were unsuccessful in their initial student teaching placement were offered the opportunity to develop and complete an intervention plan to focus on the remediation of the problem areas that contributed to non-success in student teaching. This article describes the importance of helping preservice teachers achieve success in student teaching.
