The Educational Work and Impact of the "Transylvanian School": An Agenda for Research
McCarthy, Joseph M.
Online Submission
The "Transylvanian School," a group mainly composed of clergy of the Transylvanian Uniate Church, was chiefly responsible for originating and fostering the myth of the Roman origins of the Romanian people, elaborating it in works of history, in schoolbooks, and in grammars and dictionaries. The major figure of the group, Gheorge Sincai, had the greatest educational influence, as director of Uniate elementary schools and principal of the normal school in Blaj. Despite a great deal of study of the significance and impact of this elite, the exact nature and effect of their educational projects needs clarification. How effective were teachers in transmitting a nationalism based on consciousness of Romanian origins? How were the ideas central to Romanian nationalism embedded in a curriculum and how did they affect the concepts and actions of the broad mass of students? How did the work of this group not only form a national consciousness but also promote enlightened values of progress and rationality? And how did this elite and its work compare with similar elites and their work? Rich possibilities exist here for educational historiography. (Contains 26 notes.)
