The purpose of this article is to describe an applied method of assessing and manipulating environmental factors influencing student behavior. The assessment procedure is called structural analysis (SA) and can be a part of a functional behavioral assessment (FBA) process or a stand-alone set of procedures for teachers to use in their classrooms. First, a short description of the FBA logic is provided, as well as a description of the differences between a functional analysis (FA) and an SA. Then a step-by-step approach is described, with examples from a case study conducted by the first author with a student in a general education second-grade classroom. The goal of this article is for teachers to be able to use SA procedures in their classrooms to help students be successful. (Contains 4 figures and 3 tables.)
