Johnny Appleseed Comes to Class
Coffman, Margaret; Peggy, Liggit
Science and Children, v43 n1 p48-51 Sep 2005
Just imagine the excitement in the classroom when Johnny Appleseed strides in. Barefoot and dressed in a burlap sack, he-well, actually, it's you dressed up as Johnny-wears a tin pan for a hat and smiles as he relates the reason for his visit. Fall is apple season, and he's here to explain how all the beautiful fall apples were produced. The story unfolds as students examine flowers and apples, learn about the functions of flowers and fruit, and discuss the role of honeybees and humans in the life cycle of the apple tree. Elementary life science methods professors, have found students often misunderstand the connection between flowers and fruits. Therefore, they asked Johnny Appleseed to introduce the life cycle of the apple tree to students.
