The aging population is a rapidly growing demographic in the United States. Isolation, limited autonomy, and declining physical and mental health render many older adults vulnerable to abuse, neglect, and exploitation. As the population grows, so does the need for Adult Protective Services (APS). This article highlights an ultrasensitive subgroup of older adults who may be more susceptible to victimization--those who have Alzheimer's disease or dementia. The article proposes a model approach to strengthen APS's response to initial calls of elder maltreatment, particularly within the state of Georgia, so that professionals are better prepared to detect and intervene on behalf of older abuse victims who may lack the capacity to do so by themselves.
