Introduction to Engineering Chemistry is a four-credit hour (one semester) course designed to introduce marine engineering students to the rudiments of basic (introductory) inorganic chemistry. The course consists of 18 units (numbered 1.0 through 18.0) focusing on these subject areas: fundamental concepts; structure of the atom and the periodic law; the relationship of periodic classification to the properties of the elements; chemical bonding; chemical symbols, formulas, and equations; the gaseous state and kinetic molecular theory; liquid and solid states; solutions; oxidation-reduction reactions; acids, bases, and salts; chemical equilibria; ionic equilibria involving weak electrolytes; solubility product principle; electrochemistry; chemistry and properties of liquified natural gas; alloys; nuclear chemistry; and corrosion. Terminal objectives (which take on the number of the units followed by successive units in the tenths place) and enabling objectives (which take the number of the unit and the number of the terminal objective followed by successive units in the hundredths place) are provided for each of the 18 units.
