Making Conjectures in Dynamic Geometry: The Potential of a Particular Way of Dragging
Mariotti, Maria Alessandra; Baccaglini-Frank, Anna
New England Mathematics Journal, v43 p22-33 May 2011
When analyzing what has changed in the geometry scenario with the advent of dynamic geometry systems (DGS), one can notice a transition from the traditional graphic environment made of paper-and-pencil, and the classical construction tools like the ruler and compass, to a virtual graphic space, made of a computer screen, graphical tools that are available within a given software environment and a particular mode, the dragging mode, that allows the transformation of images on the screen, giving the effect of "dragging them". The dragging tool, which is activated through the mouse, can determine the motion of different objects in fundamentally two ways: (1) "direct motion"; and (2) "indirect motion". This article analyzes dragging from a phenomenological perspective. In particular the authors discuss how dragging can be used to perceive invariants and produce a conditional statement. This kind of dragging can be further separated into exploring the consequences of a certain set of premises, and into finding the premise of a conditional statement. The latter corresponds to identifying "under which conditions a given configuration takes on a certain property". The authors focus on this particular process of conjecture-generation that has been described and analyzed during a recent research study. (Contains 3 figures.)
