Working with Homeless People: A Guide for Staff and Volunteers. Revised.
Haus, Amy, Ed.
The ad hoc network of shelters and related services that has been developed in an effort to meet the most critical needs of the homeless population is staffed by a wide spectrum of professionals and volunteers. Many of these individuals lack easy access to information, training, or resource materials to help them with their social services work. This handbook presents basic information and procedures to work effectively with homeless people. The primary audience for the book is the volunteers and staff who serve in private shelters and programs throughout the New York metropolitan area. Issues in the following areas are discussed: (1) working with homeless people; (2) homeless families; (3) mental illness among homeless people; (4) alcoholism and substance abuse; (5) health care; (6) preventing and managing conflict; (7) advocacy; (8) entitlements; and (9) shelter admission. Illustrations accompany the text. A short bibliography of additional resources is included. (BJV)
