The Teaching Profession in Europe.
Archer, E. G.; Peck, B. T.
This volume discusses the changing face of Europe and examines dimensions of the teaching profession in different countries. Matters related to recruitment, training, recognition and status, probation, teaching conditions, career advancement, and inservice opportunities are identified and developed. Teachers who contemplate moving from one country to another and those interested in the permutations and interpretations of training and teaching elsewhere are enabled to become more aware and knowledgeable about prospects and problems. The book is organized into four parts: The first, "Some Professional Issues," includes teaching in Europe: the challenge, the issues and the problems, professional identity and recognition, teacher mobility, and teacher concerns and the unions. Part 2,"Country Case Studies," highlights Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Ireland, England and Wales, France, Germany, Greece, Italy, Luxembourg, The Netherlands, Portugal, Scotland, Spain, Sweden, and Switzerland. Part 2 also includes a section entitled vocational Education and the Teacher. The third part, "Looking Forward" (in French) by Pierre Vanbergen, President, International European Association of Teachers, reviews the role of the Commission of the European Communities (CEE) with regard to teacher education and prospects for the future. The final section contains seven appendices: The European Association of Teachers AEDE/EAT; Resolution of the Council and Ministers of Education Meeting within the Council: On the European Dimension in Education, May 1988; school ages, school weeks, school days; useful addresses; glossary; The Staff Development Europe project; and Entry into Teaching in European Community Countries: a summary of basic requirements.
