An Experimental Investigation of a Technique for Predicting Gains from a Special Reading Program.
Gill, Patrick Ralston
This study was an experimental investigation designed to ascertain the effectiveness of a technique for predicting student success in a special reading program. The disparity between a student's score on a reading test taken silently and his score on an equivalent form which was read orally by the investigator as the student read it silently was used to predict his achievement in reading. The subjects were 119 sixth, seventh, and eighth grade students enrolled in special reading classes. The intermediate and advanced batteries of the Metropolitan Achievement Test: Reading were administered as a pretest. Two days later an equivalent form of the same test was administered, with the administrator reading the test orally as the subjects read it silently. Three months later a third equivalent form of the same test was administered as a posttest. The findings indicated that the technique investigated was of at least limited value in predicting student success in a special reading program. The stanine deviation scores were found to be of more value as predictors than were the raw deviation scores, and groups composed of students with stanine deviation scores of three or more had greater mean achievement scores than did the other groups.
