Predictors for Associate Degree Nursing Students' First Attempt on NCLEX-RN

Nursing program administrators need to identify significant predictors for associate degree nursing (ADN) students to determine characteristics of those who will most likely pass the NCLEX-RN® on the first attempt. The purpose of the quantitative study with a correlation prediction design was to determine if a relationship existed between the predictor variables and outcome of ADN students' likelihood of passing the NCLEX-RN® on the first attempt. The pre-admission predictors included ADN students' college GPA, college science grades, college mathematics grades, and ACT composite and science scores. The post-admission predictor was the ADN students' scores on the Comprehensive Predictor RN examination. The criterion variable was whether ADN students passed or failed the NCLEX-RN® on the first attempt. Application of the current study results to the theories of transformational leadership and Context, Input, Process, and Product (CIPP) evaluation model are offered. Data were collected using archival data for 188 ADN students who graduated in 2007, 2008, and 2009. Pearson's "r," point-biserial, and Spearman's "rho" correlations identified that four of the six predictors had a significant positive relationship with the outcome. Two separate logistic regression analyses resulted in classifying 97.5% and 94.5% of the cases for ADN students most likely to pass the NCLEX-RN R® exam on the first attempt. Nursing administrators and educators have limited time and resources to admit students and evaluate nursing programs. The current quantitative study offers evidence-based guidance for nursing educators to admit students and improve program outcomes with recommendations for future research.
