Suggestions are made in this sourcebook for adapting teaching strategies and curriculum materials in social studies to accomodate the needs of the visually impaired (VI) student. It is presented in eight chapters. Chapter one explains why elementary grade social studies, with its emphasis on visual media, presents difficulties for VI children. Chapter two suggests ways for the regular teacher and classmates to accept the mainstreamed VI student as a normal person. It explains how to physically guide a VI person in unfamiliar territory. It also describes the role of the resource teacher. Chapter three explores learning through sensory experiences, stressing activities for the entire class which utilize auditory, tactile, and multisensory experiences. Chapter four gives tips to effectively involve the VI child in class discussions, and suggests ways to develop discussion and questioning skills. Chapter five reviews strategies for learning through use and verbal description of pictures, tactile illustrations, films, filmstrips, drawing, and bulletin board activities. Chapter six explains how small group activities, role play, and dramatization can enhance the VI student's participation in social studies projects. Chapter seven explores out-of-class resources, field trips, and guest speakers as additional learning aids. Chapter eight gives three tips for successful teaching: plan ahead, don't overadapt, and work cooperatively with the resource teacher. Appendices list publishers' materials which have been adapted for VI use, guidelines for adapting social studies materials, and special aids for VI students. (AV)
