Current Clinical Interventions for Smoking Cessation: A Review of Empirical Studies.
Marcellino, Robert Leonard, Jr.
This document reviews all empirical studies on clinically-based smoking cessation interventions that were reported in "Psychological Abstracts" between January 1982 and March 1990. Interventions are categorized as either physiological or psychological in orientation and are further grouped according to specific treatment type: acupuncture, anticholinergics, nicotine gum, gradual reduction, restricted environmental stimulation therapy, hypnosis, aversion therapies, contingent reinforcement, and cognitive-behavioral skills training. It is concluded from a review of the results of the studies that abstinence rates one year following treatment generally fall between 20 and 30 percent, although persuasive evidence is presented for the relative superiority of two interventions: nicotine gum in combination with other physiologically-oriented techniques and aversion therapies in combination with other physiologically-oriented techniques. Suggestions for future research are offered. Nine data tables illustrate abstinence rates for various studies and a 10th table compares psychological and physiological interventions across all the studies reviewed. Six pages of references are included. (Author/NB)
