State of Transition: Post-Apartheid Educational Reform in South Africa. Monographs in International Education.
Harber, Clive
This book reviews the major dimensions of post-apartheid educational change and continuity in South Africa since 1994. It sets educational reform in the context of the nature of the anti-apartheid struggle inside South Africa and in the global economic environment in which South Africa re-entered the world stage as a legitimate actor. Recognizing the difference between planned reform at the policy level and the actual nature of educational change within the schools, the book sets educational reform in the contextual realities of South African education as they presently exist in order to understand the difficulties and ambiguities of change and transition and the overt aims and goals enshrined in policy documents and legislation. Five chapters focus on: (1) "Policy, Finance and Governance"; (2) "Over the Rainbow? Race, Language and Gender"; (3) "Qualifications, Curriculum and Assessment"; (4) "Life in Schools: The Culture of Learning and Teaching"; and (5) "Teacher Education and Teacher Identity." A conclusion discusses "No Instant Miracles: From Policy to Practice." (Contains 116 references.) (SM)
