To determine persistence predictors among first-time college freshmen who declared majors in a College of Human Environmental Sciences at a land-grant university, the College Student Inventory (CSI) was used. It allowed the researchers to identify predictors of retention among incoming students by investigating the relationship between persistence and certain factors as measured by the CSI and information collected from student records. Findings indicate that the variables of age, composite ACT score, high school GPA, academic confidence, desire to finish college, family emotional support, receptivity to academic assistance, and predicted academic difficulty were significant in predicting persistence to the second year.
