Sociosexuality Education for Persons with Autism Spectrum Disorders Using Principles of Applied Behavior Analysis
Wolfe, Pamela S.; Condo, Bethany; Hardaway, Emily
TEACHING Exceptional Children, v42 n1 p50-61 Sep-Oct 2009
Applied behavior analysis (ABA) has emerged as one of the most effective empirically based strategies for instructing individuals with autism spectrum disorders (ASD). Four ABA-based strategies that have been found effective are video modeling, visual strategies, social script fading, and task analysis. Individuals with ASD often struggle with issues of sociosexuality. Characteristics of individuals having ASD, particularly impairments related to social skills, often make it difficult for them to navigate the sometimes subtle and complex issues related to social and/or sexual situations. The need to educate individuals with ASD about sociosexual issues is widely acknowledged. Sexual issues for individuals with ASD can include inappropriate sexual behaviors; sexual abuse; unwanted pregnancy; or display of sexual behaviors in inappropriate times/places. In this article the theoretical principles of ABA are applied to the instruction of persons having ASD in sociosexual education using effective practices. Through case studies, examples are given of sociosexual domain areas and ways to teach the content using empirically based methods. (Contains 8 tables.)
