Welding III.
Allegheny County Community Coll., Pittsburgh, PA.
Instructional objectives and performance requirements are outlined in this course guide for Welding III, an advanced course in arc welding offered at the Community College of Allegheny County to provide students with the proficiency necessary for industrial certification. The course objectives, which are outlined first, specify that students will learn to weld single vee groove weld-butt joints with backing strips in the flat, horizontal, and vertical positions following code specifications established by the American Welding Society (AWS) and the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME). Required texts and lab materials are identified prior to the presentation of a list of course achievement standards for 16 performance areas: setting up test plates; tacking test plates; electrode manipulation; achieving a proper height above the test plate surface; undercutting on a finished weld; bend tests; draglines; guarding gouges while cutting test plates; finishing a test plate cut; bead height/width during oxy-acetylene welding; ripple spacing; and penetration. The guide then presents an outline of the topics, activities, and tests to be covered and/or completed during each of the 16 weeks in the semester. Objectives and instructions follow for each of 16 performance tasks which form the basis of student evaluation. AWS amd ASME welder qualifications are appended along with forms to be used in keeping student records. (JP)
