The Russian University, Professors, and Students in 1910-1915
Ianitskii, O. N.
Russian Education and Society, v50 n7 p70-92 Jul 2008
This article describes the scientific and social life of the Russian university at the beginning of the twentieth century. Higher education in Russia, having gone through the upheavals of the first Russian revolution, was experiencing a huge upsurge. Although professors and students had been subjected to police persecution, and despite the shakiness of the institutional norms of higher education, "it had experienced a radical breakthrough, the system of administration had been changed, and radical reforms had been made in the system of instruction. The number of students reached a level that had been unprecedented in Russia." In this article, the author draws on the publications of students, graduate students, and university professors of those years, as well as his own family archives. (Contains 5 notes.)
