The Value of Risk: Noah's Ark at the Skirball Cultural Center
Bernstein, Sheri; Gittleman, Marni
Journal of Museum Education, v35 n1 p43-58 Spr 2010
In this article Bernstein and Gittleman address the role of risk in creating an exhibition that is of value to the public and is aligned with their cultural institution's core values. Through an examination of the development process, the authors present lessons that can assist others who are interested in undertaking an exhibition with similar aspirations. Noah's Ark at the Skirball became "the tail that wags the dog" by leading the Skirball Cultural Center to more fully realize its fundamental goals of transmitting values from one generation to the next, welcoming the stranger, and caring for the earth and one another. In a sidebar, the authors describe an initiative born of this exhibition that pays forward the messages of the Noah's Ark family galleries through direct action and involvement with community partners.
