The Spectrum Disorders: An Exploratory Study of Family, Social, Individual and Psychological Distress Dimensions.
Zarski, John J.; And Others
Although there is literature on Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS), empirical research on family, social, and individual factors that may influence the psychological distress experienced by AIDS, Aids-Related Complex (ARC), Human Immunodeficiency Virus positive (HIV+) and worried well individuals is limited. This study explored the importance of family variables, social support, and homophobia regarding their influence on the psychological distress experienced by homosexual/bisexual men at varying levels of risk for AIDS. The 162 subjects were divided into the following groups: 60 HIV spectrum disorder (including persons with AIDS, ARC, and HIV+), 61 untested, and 41 tested negative. All subjects were homosexual or bisexual men who volunteered for the study. Subjects completed the Symptom Checklist-90 Revised, the Nungesser Homosexual Attitudes Inventory, the Perceived Social Support from Friends and Family scales, and the Family of Origin Scale. Results indicated that the HIV spectrum disorder group experienced significantly greater psychological distress than the untested or test negative groups. Self-perceived levels of health relative to family of origin experiences were below average for all groups, social support from friends was significantly greater than that reported for family, and level of internalized homophobia was significantly greater for the test negative groups only. (Implications for counselors working with homosexual and bisexual men are provided. Eight pages of references and 37 tables of data are included.) (Author/NB)
