Thinking Globally in Literacy Instruction: Making a Difference in the World
Hoffman, James V.; Sailors, Misty; Aguirre, Sarah H.
Reading Teacher, v70 n2 p143-148 Sep-Oct 2016
Literacy is a basic right of all children around the world. In this article, we describe our work in promoting literacy in Sub-Saharan Africa. We frame our work in contrast to much of the deficit-oriented work in international aid, offer suggestions for ways that the reader might engage in work around literacy that is international in character, and organize our suggestions into three areas: connecting with the local, developing and sharing understanding through literature study, and taking a political stance.
