The manufacturing process used to produce printbands for International Business Machines, Inc. involves a photolithographic process in which the stainless steel panels are chemically machined using strong ferric chloride etching solution containing hydrochloric acid. The waste material that results from this chemical reaction is a solution composed primarily of ferric chloride. This case study examined the development of an alternative process that would reduce the amounts of ferric chloride used in the manufacturing cycle by regenerating the ferric chloride and reduce the amounts of hazardous wastes. Three options to solve the problem are presented: the electrochemical option; the ozone gas option, and the air oxidation option. The decision to choose the oxygen option is discussed. A teaching note that contains educational objectives, a case synopsis, suggestions for using the case, and an analysis and evaluation is provided in a separate document. (MDH)
