Districts Tackling Truancy with New Zeal
Gehring, John
Education Week, v24 n4 p1, 22 Sep 2004
This article reports the aggressive outreach efforts exerted by various schools in fighting truancy among its students. These actions were driven in part by the No Child Left Behind Act, which required schools and districts to improve their students' academic performance or face sanctions. According to educators, ensuring that students show up for school is essential in improving academic performance. Many states have used attendance rates as one factor in determining whether schools were making adequate progress under the law. As such, many urban districts, which face high dropout rates and shrinking state aid based on daily student attendance, have launched campaigns to improve attendance.
