The 3 Kinds of School Safety since 9/11
Merrow, John
Education Digest: Essential Readings Condensed for Quick Review, v70 n4 p4-15 Dec 2004
This article focuses on the three kinds of school safety: (1) physical; (2) emotional; and (3) intellectual, and details how to determine if a school is safe. Excellence in schools demands that schools be physically, emotionally, and intellectually safe for students, while "good enough" schools are simply physically safe. Here, the author describes how all this concern about school safety has been affected by 9/11. Due to the tragic terrorist attacks in New York City and Washington, D.C., issues of safety have taken on new urgency, and it is even more important for adults in schools to create a physically, emotionally, and intellectually safe environment for all children. He suggests specific ways to help children cope with traumatic and frightening situations and to make them feel safe at school.
